OrchardFest (Occasional Regional Choral Holiday And Retreat, Deloraine) is a 5ish-day minifest for 30 people, being held as a fundraiser for MIV18 in Northern Tasmania. We’re holding it in Deloraine because it’s been a while since many AICSA choristers have been to Tassie, and because things are cheap down there. Also it coincides with their huge annual Craft Fair and I know I’m not the only chorister with a passion for crafting.
Much as I’d love to have you all there, this minifest is not being aimed at students. It’s a fundraising event for MIV18, and so we’re intending it for those kind of choristers who will also be attending AIV in January 2019, and for whom too much singing (no such thing) is never enough. If we had someone attend OrchardFest and then not be able to afford AIV, I would be really quite upset.
Dates and Getting There
Thurs 1 – Wed 7 November, 2018.
Arrive after work on Thursday and leave on Wednesday morning, once the flights back to Melbourne are a bit cheaper after CupDay weekend. Feel free to arrive on Friday morning, but we won’t be able to organise airport collection then.
Deloraine is an easy 40min drive through picturesque scenery from Launceston, which is accessible by flights directly from Melbourne and Sydney. Conveniently it’s also a 40min drive out of Devonport, where the Spirit of Tasmania ferry arrives from Melbourne. Make it an adventure and arrive by ship!
If interested, you can arrive earlier or stay longer for $50/person/night to have a holiday and see the surrounding area. Just indicate on your rego form.
We have access to a house in Deloraine that sleeps 30. As we need to all be able to rehearse in the Rectory, due to all halls in town is taken up by the craft fair, we need to keep rehearsal numbers to manageable levels.
The house is The Rectory, at 8 West Church St, Deloraine.
It’s a beautiful old building, built in 1865, that has been nicely renovated inside – it has 5 bedrooms each with 3 bunks (6 beds), 3.5 bathrooms and a large kitchen. As you can see from the map, it’s close to the river and to the centre of town. It’s also 5min walk from Woolworths, so a very convenient location for getting supplies for lunches and dinners - or you can dine out at local eateries, but they may be busy with the craft fair.
We have a flat rego fee of $300, which covers hire of the theatre, musical staff, breakfasts, accommodation, bedlinen and towels, etc etc etc. That’s a bargain for 5ish days of singing!
I am excited to welcome Eloise Wilmann as the OrchardFest conductor. Eloise is currently the MonUCS Assistant Conductor and President, and of course was the co-convenor of MIV18 in January. Accompanist details will be coming soon.
The main piece we’re going to perform is Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols – it has both SSA and SATB arrangements, and we’ll work out which we’re doing when we see rego numbers and voice parts. Traditionally it has harp accompaniment, and I’m working on sourcing a local harpist to play for us – if that falls through we’ll perform with piano accompaniment. You’ll notice there are some solos, too – these will come from the choir, so if you have your heart set on singing one of them, you can start practicing now!
In the first half of the concert we’ll do some repertoire pieces from the MonUCS songbooks. These will be familiar to most of us, so we will be able to concentrate our efforts on the Britten.
The concert is booked for the evening of Tuesday 6 Nov, in the Meander Valley Performing Arts Centre – a local theatre that seats 150 people. Tickets for audience members will be $10 and will be available at the door.
Rego is open now, so register soon to secure your place! HERE
